Desert, Ocean and Luxury at the Tip of Baja, California
When you go to "Cabo", the first phrase in Spanish you should know, after "Gracias" and "Por Favor" are, "¿Es Usted Choyero?" This is a great conversation starter as it means "Are you Baja born?" "Choyero" derives its name from the beautiful and ubiquitous Cholla cactus of the Baja Peninsula. Choyeros are very proud of their State of Baja, the youngest state in the Mexican federation. Before becoming the Free and Sovereign State of Baja California in 1953, it was a wild, sparsely populated territory ruled by the powers in Mexico City.

Terramar Destinations DMC
Bookending Los Cabos, the twin cities of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas have their own culture, look and lifestyle. We checked into two Starwood Hotel properties and traveled around with Terramar Destinations DMC to scope out the scene. The program started with a glass-bottom boat tour to the iconic Arch at Lands End. The distinctive rock formation is only accessible by boat, and during the voyage, we saw sea lions, pelicans and grey whales. The small boats hold 10 people and they're great for adventurous spirits because they ride so close to the water. Terramar can transport groups up to 200 pax to the Arch on large catamarans or a 50-foot yacht, with stops for snorkeling along the way.

JUST BACK FROM: Cabo. Last week, Senior Producer Andrew Skwarek was stranded in San Jose Del Cabo on Mexico's Baja Peninsula after Hurricane Sandy crippled much of the Northeast. Not a bad place for a layover. A quick three-night trip to this seaside desert oasis turned into a weeklong stay at the all-inclusive Barceló Los Cabos Palace Deluxe, with plenty of dolphins and sun to keep him company.

Cabo - A Sure Thing
After you've achieved the perfect base tan - somewhere between honey and mocha - it's time to tear yourself away from the beach lounger. There are cooking classes, surf lessons at Cerritos Beach (one of Mexico's best breaks), and kayaking to the Arch, of which the latter two you can book through Baja Outback. Cooking classes at Los Tamarindos Organic Farm are a must. Most often led by owner Enrique Silver, you'll tour the farm and gather ingredients before heading up to the open kitchen to prepare your own Mexican specialties like squash blossoms stuffed with ricotta and fish Veracruz. The best part: savoring the four-course meal with a glass of wine on the terrace overlooking the farm.

5 Reasons to Get off the Beach in Los Cabos
Has winter found you dreaming of beautiful beaches? At the Southern tip of Baja California, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortez, Los Cabos might be just what you're seeking-stunning stretches of sand between dramatic rocky outcrops. Sun and scenery are plentiful, but there's plenty to do besides soaking it all in, from discovering local art and cuisine to outdoor adventures and spa trips.

Tonja's Travels
It only rains two to five times per year in the Los Cabos area. They tell me it’s a major news event and people panic when rain is in the forecast, even though they usually end up getting only a few drops. So when you look at the forecast, every day is a bright orange sun with temperatures varying from high 80s to low 90s. Which makes vacation planning oh-so-easy. The Sheraton Hacienda is a gorgeous resort with more swimming pools than I can count, villa style rooms and a never-ending view of the Sea of Cortez. The complex has two five-diamond restaurants within walking distance of each other. We dined at both: De Cortez and Pitahayas. Pitahayas has a wine cellar with several rooms of any wine you can imagine. The rooms are comfortable, and pools are the perfect temperature and we saw many families enjoying the beach and kids pool.

Between sand and sea.
It wasn't much of a slip, just a slight wobble on loose sand. But it was enough to keep my hiking companion from making the leap across a fathomless gorge on the wind-whipped cliffs of the Sea of Cortez. No matter, the view from her side was just as awesome as it was from my tiny perch high above the crashing waves. Watching a line of bright red kayaks paddling across the turquoise cover, the seaside cliff walk showcases the best of the Baja.

COMMUNE WITH NATURE
When on a peninsula, it's easy to forget that some activities don't take place on the water. In fact, the Baja peninsula is home to seven canyons tucked within the Sierra Laguna mountain range. Most are easily reached on guided hikes with Baja Outback (314-754-8808; bajaoutback.com). You'll be rewarded with towering waterfalls and bubbling pools fed by hot spring. Baja Outback offers another glimpse of the area's natural riches, this time down on the beach. Leatherback and Olive Ridley sea turtles lay their nests on these shores, but predators abound, so the eggs are gathered by trained volunteers and moved to protected areas where they can hatch.

Mexican Beach Residence Makes Anyone Feel at Home
CABO PULMO, MEXICO - The sound of the ocean swirls over the white sands - where horses run wild and pelicans swoop above the azure water - and then thunders around Casa Neverending. Just steps from the Sea of Cortez in this remote Baja Peninsula fishing village, this house is far from ordinary. It was designed to be completely accessible for a wheelchair, even though the owners, Patrisha A. Wright, 62, and her partner, Debra Zeyen, 64, do not use one.

KAYAKING AROUND THE TIP OF BAJA CALIFORNIA
No it isn't so named because of affectionate couples. Apparently Jacques Cousteau so named this spot in Cabo San Lucas after watching the Pacific swells pound the calmer Medano Bay on the other side. He said the Pacific was making love to the Sea of Cortez. Our kayak guide Carlos Michaud tells us locals call the Pacific side beach Divorce Beach because it is so rough. We've kayaked from Cabo San Lucas to see the famous arch-the natural rock arch that is surrounded by towering rock walls. It is said this is where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez here on this peninsula but our guide tells us the true spot is probably two hours north of here.

Driving Vacation & ATV Adventures: Cabo San Lucas to Buena Vista - Baja California
Tour companies like Terramar Destinations offer a smorgasbord of activities, from snorkeling in the protected waters of Santa Maria Bay (warning: expect about a four-hour trip on a catamaran) to kayaking in the crystal-clear waters where you may battle high winds and a challenging surf. Other high-energy activities in the area include jet skiing, parasailing and kitesurfing. Meanwhile, more laid-back types can opt for whale watching, swimming with dolphins, take a "booze cruise," or simply sail around the harbor for a sunset dinner cruise complete with ice-cold margaritas.

Terramar Security Report
San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas collectively known as Los Cabos, not only remain safe travel destinations but comparatively speaking are actually safer options than most U.S. metropolises. International news outlets continue to generalize reports on crime and violence primarily afflicting northern Mexican border cities. Located at the southernmost tip of the 1000-mile long Baja Peninsula in the State of Baja California Sur and separated from mainland Mexico by the Sea of Cortez, Los Cabos is far removed from those highly reported and troubled areas of Mexico, both in distance and ambiance. Please do not be fooled by the mainstream media stating that Mexico as a whole is unsafe. This could not be further than the truth.
